Man fatally shot by Lakemoor police was suspect in Pennsylvania murder

LAKEMOOR, Ill. -- A man that was killed after an officer-involved shooting in Lakemoor Thursday morning was wanted in connection to a Pennsylvania murder.

Kenneth Edwin Martell, 36, was shot and killed around 5 a.m. near Four Seasons Boulevard and Sullivan Lake Road. The Lakemoore Police Department said an officer was speaking to Martell when he pulled out a gun. Officials said a "struggle ensued" and during the struggle, a second officer arrived. Police said the officer saw  that Martell had a second handgun. At least one of the two cops fired at Martell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy indicated that Martell died of injuries from a gunshot wound to the face. Toxicology results are pending.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Investigators confirmed that Martell was the individual Pennsylvania authorities were searching for in connection with a homicide that occurred earlier this week in Crawford County, Pa.

Investigators are gathering the police bodycam footage for more details.

The two officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation. They were both placed on desk duty.
