PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. – Emergency crews remain on the scene of a massive fire at an apartment complex in Prospect Heights that left dozens of families without a place to live.
The fire broke out in a the main building at in the 800 block of Mcintosh Court around 1:20 p.m., according to the fire department. In a short period of time, aided by strong, gusting winds, the flames spread. To two more buildings caught fire in the four-building complex.
The top floor of the main building is a complete loss, fire officials said. Other areas of the buildings are heavily damaged.
100 firefighters from 50 communities, from the Lake Michigan shoreline to Elgin, arrived to aid operation.
Two residents and a firefighter suffered minor injuries but all three declined treatment at the scene.
It is the largest fire Prospect Heights has fought in almost 15 years.
The Red Cross has opened a shelter for people affected at Lakewood Chapel, 1307 E Palatine Road in Arlington Heights.
Prospect Heights police are instructing people to stay away from the area.
