CHICAGO — Two young brothers are dead following an apartment fire in Humboldt Park. Four of their relatives remain hospitalized in critical condition.
The blaze whipped through a three-flat apartment building in the 1000 block of North Avers Avenue just before 2 a.m. Saturday.
Two brothers, ages 4 and 8, died in the fire. Their 18-month-old brother remained in critical condition Saturday with burns, relatives said.
Three adults were also in critical condition: the children's mother, her brother, and a man who is father to two of the boys. All three adults are believed to have been badly burned.
Fire officials on Saturday said the fire appeared to have been caused by the "careless use of smoking materials."
A GoFundMe page was launched to raise money for the victims and their relatives.
According to relatives, the family just moved to the Humboldt Park apartment three months ago. Their landlord lives in the basement. Smoke detectors were in place, but did not work Saturday.
