Elgin school board member who equated American flag with toilet paper resigns
ELGIN, Ill. — An Elgin school board member who took heat for her controversial comments on the American flag, has resigned.
Traci O’Neal Ellis in September compared the American flag to toilet paper in a Facebook post on her personal account. Ellis was showing support for NFL players who took the knee during the national anthem. She said at the time: “Why did I post it? Because I’m frustrated, deeply frustrated.”
Ellis on Monday announced her resignation.
In a new Facebook post Tuesday, Ellis said “flaggate,” as she called it, presented new activism opportunities for her on a national level. Ellis did not provide specifics, but said she hopes to advocate for social justice.
According to the Daily Herald, the Elgin school district has 45 days to fill Ellis’ vacancy.
