A new bill being debated by Illinois legislators seeks to give divorcing parents equal time raising their children.

A number of states are considering a kind of co-parenting model.

Supporters say it's better for children because it gives a chance for both parents to be equally present in their lives.

But the bill does have its critics too, who say it could take away protections against controlling or abusive spouses.

The bill has passed committee and has its third reading today.

The bill is sponsored by State Representative Lashawn Ford who spoke to the WGN Morning News about it.
