CHICAGO — Illinois is joining a lawsuit that’s fighting a new citizenship question on the U.S. Census.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says that question would discourage people from participating and prevent them from being counted.

Low participation could lead to fewer seats in Congress and Electoral College votes.

California and New York are among Democratic states that are also suing.

President Donald Trump’s administration says adding the question will get an accurate count of eligible voters.

The Justice Department says the question will help it protect the right to vote and fair elections.
