CHICAGO — Sister Jean may have gotten her share of the spotlight as the Loyola Ramblers hurtled toward the Final Four this month.

But WGN's Patrick Elwood reports: There's one fan who's far less famous and just as passionate about the Chicago team.

Norman Buxbaum, 88, played on the 1949 Ramblers’ NIT team when that tournament was the most prestigious in the country.

After upsetting Cincinnati, Kentucky and Bradley, the team lost to the University of San Francisco by one point.

Buxbaum played guard and forward for the Ramblers after graduating from Crane High School on the city's West Side. He was his parents' ninth child.

There's nothing Buxbaum would love to see more than a Loyola championship in 2018.

“It’s just fantastic!” he said.

Meanwhile, on campus, anything maroon and gold is in high demand. Bookstore staff has been working overtime just to keep the shelves stocked.
