Chicago, Overland Park mayors wager on Loyola-Kansas State game
CHICAGO — The mayors of Chicago and Overland Park, Kansas, made a friendly wager Saturday on the outcome of the NCAA Elite Eight basketball tournament game between Loyola-Chicago and Kansas State.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he’ll send Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach some Chicago-style pizza from Loyola student favorite J.B. Alberto’s Pizza should Kansas win. If Loyola wins, Gerlach said he’ll send Emanuel ribs from local barbecue restaurant Q39. The losing mayor also will make a donation to a charity of the winning mayor’s choice.
Emanuel has chosen Chicago’s Becoming A Man youth mentoring program. Gerlach has picked Overland Park’s Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead.
“Chicago is united behind Sister Jean and this incredible, inspiring Loyola team,” Emanuel said in a statement Saturday. “While we are looking forward to celebrating the Ramblers’ trip to the Final Four with some Kansas City-style barbecue, we’re prepared to send Chicago-style pizza from J.B. Alberto’s in the unlikely event that the Wildcats can pull off a victory.”
Ninth seed Kansas State takes on 11th seed Loyola-Chicago at 5:09 p.m. CT on Saturday in Atlanta.
The impressive Ramblers lineup includes Chicago Public Schools graduates Donte Ingram (Simeon High School) and Lucas Williamson (Whitney Young).
