Suburban teacher charged with sex assault, abuse of 2 children

AURORA, Ill. – A suburban kindergarten teacher has been accused of sexually assaulting two children.

Juan Avendano, 62, was charged with with one felony count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, five felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and one felony county of indecent solicitation of a child.

Prosecutors said Avendano, who works for the East Aurora School District 131, had sexual contact with two victims under the age of 13 from April 2014 until March 2018.

He had been working as a teacher at Bardwell Elementary School. He was placed on administrative leave on March 8.

The U.S. Marshal service took him into custody at his Aurora home on Monday.

He appeared in court on Tuesday.

Police said the case is still under investigation and anyone with information on Avendano's activities should contact authorities.
