CHICAGO -- An armed man shot by Chicago police on the South Side Wednesday afternoon has now died.

The shooting happened at about 2:15 p.m. at 61st and King Drive in the Washington Park neighborhood.

Officers were responding to a call of shots fired when they shot a man who they say was carrying a semi-automatic pistol.

Police said they called an ambulance right away and recovered a handgun at the scene.

Aquoness Cathery was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 1:26 a.m. Thursday, the Cook County Medical Examiner said.

Police did not say what prompted the officers to shoot, but they say they do not believe the man fired his weapon.

The officers were wearing body cameras. They are now on 30 days of desk duty, which is department policy.
