Man dies after being found shot in outside Cook County criminal courthouse

CHICAGO --A man appearing in court was shot and killed just after leaving the Cook County courthouse Friday morning.

The man was taken in critical condition to the hospital but died this afternoon.

It was just after 11:15 a.m. when authorities say a 28-year-old man was shot and in the chest at 31st and Rockwell, about a block away from the from the Cook County jail.

He was driven by a 26-year-old woman to the busy entrance of the Cook County criminal courthouse building in a black SUV that was riddled with bullet holes.

The courthouse was briefly placed on lockdown.  Police say the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A court house source tells WGN News that the victim had appeared in criminal court Friday morning  and may have been recognized and followed by the shooter. Investigators combed the area in front of the courthouse and closed California Ave for hours as they investigated what is the third  shooting near the courthouse this year.   On March 6th, 23-year-old Kamari Belmont was killed several blocks south of the jail  right after being released   Two weeks later, a 21-year-old man was shot six times in the groin while walking to the courthouse.

Police have not arrested anyone yet, but say the investigation is ongoing.
