UPDATE: U.S. Marshals catch tattoo-covered sex offender after picture goes viral

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Marshals say extensive media coverage led to the capture of a sex offender who failed to self-report to a Texas transitional center Wednesday.

The U.S. Marshals said after photos of Matthew Stager, 44, were widely circulated online, they received tips of numerous sightings in Washington, D.C.

Stager was spotted walking near the D.C. Superior Court by two Metropolitan Police Department officers around 4 p.m., and according to police, he was taken into custody without incident, and will face escape charges in Richmond, Virginia.

Stager was released from the Federal Correctional Complex in Petersburg, Va. on Feb. 2., and is a convicted sex offender with a a history of drug abuse and mental health concerns, U.S. Marshals said.
