LYNWOOD, Ill. -- Authorities have recovered one body from a suburban retention pond after a car plunged into its icy waters Sunday afternoon.

Cook County emergency responders spent several hours Sunday trying to recover the vehicle from the pond in Lynwood, but had to stop because of sub-zero temperatures.

The recovery effort resumed Monday and crews located the body of an African-American male.

Crews also removed the car.

The medical examiners office says it's still trying to identify the man inside the vehicle.

And investigators are looking into whether there was anyone else in the car with him.

Cook County Sheriff's police have taken over the investigation and face mysteries such as why the car left the road, traveled over 100 feet through snow covered field without getting stuck and avoided concrete barriers that surround the pond.
