She went on to inspire a generation with the children's project: "Free to Be... You and Me"

The award-winning actress and activist has written several best-sellers and she continues to work tirelessly as National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which was founded by her father Danny Thomas in 1962.
