CHICAGO -- Nine people were killed and another 19 were injured during the weekend. Among those killed was the 15-year-old grandson of U.S. congressman Danny Davis.

A judge has denied bail to two teenagers charged with first-degree murder in the 15-year-old's shooting death .

The Chicago Tribune reports that the 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl appeared before Cook County Judge James Brown on Sunday afternoon wearing juvenile detention center sweatshirts with their heads bowed.

Brown called the killing of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis' grandson a "total callous disregard for human life and that the "citizens of this city need to be protected from these defendants."

Police say Javon Wilson was shot Friday following an argument about basketball shoes. The teens were arrested Saturday and charges were announced Sunday.

Chicago has seen a dramatic rise in the number of shootings and homicides, with August being the deadliest month in the city in two decades.
