CHICAGO -- More than 60 volunteers spent Veteran’s Day serving those who served the country.

The VFW Post 1284 near Diversey and Harlem in Chicago’s Montclare neighborhood was established before World War II, and has served generations of military veterans as a place to socialize over shared experiences.

But the building needed a facelift.

And today, it got one thanks to a group of volunteers who wanted to give back to veterans.

The group, which included veterans as well, put in physical labor, their time and talent into a project that will directly benefit a group of Chicago veterans.

Many of the organizations involved emphasized that there are opportunities to volunteer to help our retired military men and women all year -- not just on Veteran’s Day.
