CHICAGO – One of the most iconic sports magazines in America will have a historic cover this week.

On Thursday the magazine released their cover for the Cubs’ first World Series championship in 108 years, featuring Anthony Rizzo celebrating after the team’s final out in their Game 7 win Wednesday over the Indians in Cleveland.

Writer Tom Verducci has the cover story on the team’s victory which ended over a century of frustration for the often downtrodden franchise. Sports Illustrated said that the magazine will be on newsstands this weekend.

The magazine predicted this would happen before the playoffs began, releasing this cover in the style of the 1908 “Sporting Life” magazine which saluted that year’s champion Cubs.

This is the first time Sports Illustrated has published a Cubs’ World Series champions front cover since the magazine didn’t begin publishing till 1954.
