CHICAGO — In addition to the historic nature of the Cubs’ comeback win against the Cleveland Indians, many fans can’t help point out the irony of their win on social media, posting “Cleveland blew a 3-1 lead.”

It might seem harsh, but the message is most likely a reference to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ own championship win, and subsequent boasting, after they came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals four months ago.

Since then, “The Warriors Blew a 3-1 Lead” has become a meme online, bolstered in part by the Cavaliers and their players. Their championship rings make reference to the comeback, with colored stones showing the team’s victories on the underside of the band.

And Lebron James, who doesn’t exactly shy away from controversy, even hosted a Halloween party featuring decorations that said “RIP 3-1 Lead” just last week. Some say this win could be karma for Cleveland’s lack of humility, we say the Cubs are just that good!

NOTE: An earlier version of this story claimed that the Wrigley marquee trolled Cleveland after the World Series by saying “CLEVELAND BLEW A 3-1 LEAD,” sharing a video that appears to be a hoax.
