Mother, son found dead in possible murder-suicide in West Town, family member says

CHICAGO -- A five-hour standoff on the city's near Northwest Side ended with a possible murder-suicide of a mother and son.

A police SWAT team found a man and woman dead inside an apartment in the Chicago's West Town neighborhood after a hostage barricade situation.

Neighbors reported gunfire near Wolcott and Chicago shortly after 5 pm. Tuesday.

Five hours later, SWAT officers made their move on the building, and found the victims inside.

The victims were identified as Loretta Purcell, 84, and Christopher Kelly Purcell, 58, who lived in the same block where they were found dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Christopher's brothers tell WGN News their brother shot and killed their mother before turning the gun on himself.   They say Christopher Purcell had a long history of mental illness as well as drug and alcohol abuse. They say their mother tried to get him help and help him herself but to no avail.

Police are conducting a homicide investigation.
