Attack in Afghanistan kills soldier from central Illinois
FAIRVIEW, Ill. — A town in central Illinois is mourning the loss of a soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan this week.
The military says in a statement 26-year-old Sgt. Douglas J. Riney of Fairview, Illinois, and 40-year-old Michael G. Sauro of McAlester, Oklahoma, died Thursday from injuries sustained during an attack in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul.
A NATO and an Afghan official earlier said a man wearing an Afghan army uniform had killed a U.S. service member and an American civilian Wednesday in Kabul.
The Defense Department says Riney was assigned to Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. He was four months into his second deployment when he was shot and killed. Riney was the father of two young children and a volunteer firefighter in the town of Fairview.
