CHICAGO — The Chicago Tribune reports that 20th Ward Alderman Willie Cochran is under federal investigation.

At issue:  Whether campaign money was used for his personal expenses.

The report cites state records, showing Cochran made dozens of revisions to his campaign reports over the past few years, often to show he paid himself with campaign funds months earlier.

Campaign records show he took more than $131,000 out of campaign funds for himself, most of it in the last five years.

It’s not against state law for candidates to pay themselves from their campaign fund for work on their election bid.  But the Tribune says it’s rare and unusual to pay themselves such a high percentage of their contributions.

Cochran told the Tribune he denies any wrongdoing and that he hasn’t been approached by investigators.
