CHICAGO — A new charity run and walk in Chicago is off to a successful start as it strives to raise money and awareness about the devastating effects of brain cancer. More than 500 people showed up at Lincoln Park this morning to participate in the First Annual BrainUp 5k Run and Walk.

Several teams tried to raise more than $150,000 to benefit clinical trials here and help brain cancer patients.

Dan and Meg Kresach of Frankfort created the nonprofit organization after they lost their 22-year-old daughter, Olivia, to an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Among the fundraisers was Team Maddy, named after 17-year-old Maddy McInerney of Libertyville. She has been battling brain cancer for nearly two years and will undergo her fifth surgery tomorrow.
