CHICAGO -- A double shooting outside of a Southwest Side L stop this morning left one man dead and led to an hours-long shutdown of the Pink Line station in the Palmer Square Neighborhood.

This Pink Line station near 21st street and California Ave. is open to the public once again after police shut it down for nearly five hours as they try to figure out what led the fatal encounter.

Rosalinda Guzman lives next door to the L stop, and says she was just waking up at around 7:30 a.m. when the shots started.

“I live next door and it’s like, scary.  My son was going to go to work early and he didn’t.  He would have gotten caught up in the cross-fire,” Guzman said.

“Two people were hit, one individual ran into the station asking for help,” said victim’s advocate Andrew Holmes.

Police say that 24-year-old man died from his injuries. A 25-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the leg and buttocks.

Victim’s advocate Andrew Holmes says police are now reviewing surveillance footage from station.

“Hopefully, CTA cameras can give the Chicago police Department the lead, pictures or anything showing who discharged that weapon,” Holmes said.

Danielle Martinez said she was trying to take her kids to the museum campus today, but turned away from the Pink Line after seeing the scene there.

“I was trying to get on the trains to take my kids to the children’s museum and I came to find this and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’” Martinez said.

Police say no one is in custody and right now the investigation is focusing on questioning the surviving victim and reviewing any surveillance footage.
