As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we take a look at some of the people and places that are making a difference in this growing community.
We kick off our month-long coverage at a Brighton Park School that has beat the odds.
Columbia Explorers Academy is 98% Latino and is ranked among the best schools in Chicago. It houses nearly 1,150 students from K-8th grade. Principal Eileen Considine says, “approximately 30 schools in our network and we are #2 overall for PARC and in some areas we are #1.”
The school points to parent involvement as the reason behind the school’s success. A group of 20 mothers visit the school every day to help the students and teachers.
Administrators are hoping to build a new facility in the future as the school is growing every year. Some classrooms are over capacity with more than 40 students.
WGN’s Lourdes Duarte has been working with the school as they want to develop a student newscast.
