CHICAGO -- Police have released a surveillance photo of a suspect in the attempted robbery of a postal worker.
Authorities say the suspect was armed with a gun and approached the carrier around 5:30 p.m. Thursday near 54th and Harper in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Police say the suspect approached the carrier from behind and demanded the mail.
Another postal worker who was driving a tractor trailer saw what was happening and jumped into help. In the tussle, a shot was fired.
The man got away without the mail.
No one was seriously hurt.
National Association of Letter Carriers Local Union leader Mack Julion says the incident highlights the dangers mail carriers face while doing their jobs. He says in just the past week in Chicago two carriers witnessed gunfire and someone broke into a mail truck.
“Carriers safety must come first,” he said. “The most important delivery our carriers make is that delivery home back to their family.”
The Postal Inspection Service is also working on a sketch of the suspect which will be released next week.
In the meantime, anyone with information should contact the postal inspectors or Chicago police.
