OAK PARK, Ill. – Friends, family and even strangers gathered in a suburban park Wednesday night to honor a teen who was shot and killed earlier this week.

Today Elijah Sims would have turned 17. Monday night, he was standing on a corner in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood when he was shot in the head.

Those closest to Elijah found it difficult to speak and could barely stand at the gathering. Elijah’s mother plead for help.

“I wish the shooters would turn themselves in. Nobody deserves to go in violence. They just don’t,” Sharita Galloway said. “Whoever pulled the trigger or knows anything about it, please call.”

Elijah loved music, both singing it and writing it. He spent most of his time in the studio.

“You would never see Elijah down,” said Jamya Lewis, a family friend. “Elijah would always have a bright spirit.”

Police are still investigating and no one is in custody.
