MONEE, Ill. — The mayor of far south suburban Monee is charged with punching an umpire in the face at a youth baseball game back in June.

An attorney for 50-year-old Mayor Jay Farquhar says he’s arranging to turn himself into the Will County Sheriff’s Department.

Farquhar says he was coaching when he acted in self-defense, striking umpire Tim Nelson over a dispute about a foul tip.

The altercation required surgery to repair Nelson’s jaw.

The local baseball and softball organization suspended Farquhar.
