2 gunmen carjack Uber driver, passengers on South Side

CHICAGO -- A Uber driver was carjacked while he was picking up passengers on the city's South Side.

The driver, 63-year-old Roy Smith, was picking up two passengers around 2 a.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of South Lake Shore Drive when a vehicle stopped in front of his car.

Two gunman exited the vehicle and approached the Uber driver and passengers with handguns. One gunman told the driver to get out, and the other gunman robbed the passengers and told them to get out.

One gunman then got inside the Uber vehicle and starting driving while a 30-year-old male passenger was attempting to get out. The man was transported to Mercy Hospital in good condition with a small cut to his hand.

The gunmen fled the scene in the Uber driver's vehicle with their checkbooks, wallets and cellphones.

No one is in custody.
