Thieves target cooking oil grease from Chicago restaurants
CHICAGO — It’s a crime you may not think about, but it’s one of the top ways thieves are making money these days.
DNAInfo reports thieves are targeting used cooking oil from restaurants — often vacuuming the grease out of containers with garden hoses that leave behind a big mess in alleys all across Chicago.
The restaurants essentially give away their used cooking oil to contracted vendors who sell it as part of a $2 billion a year industry.
The vendors say grease thieves are costing them millions in lost business.
