CHICAGO -- Authorities say a police officer who was shot in the leg by a suspect on Chicago's South Side has been released from the hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner on Friday identified the suspect as 50-year-old Derek Love, who was killed in the exchange of gunfire Thursday evening.

Police say the wounded officer and his partner were on bike patrol when a person told them about a man acting "erratically." The officers approached the man to ask him to end his cellphone call and speak with them when the man pulled out a gun and opened fire. Police say both officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

Authorities have not released the identities of the officers involved. A Chicago police spokesman says they will be on 30-day administrative duty.
