NEW YORK — Stephen Colbert, like many Cubs fans, is superstitious about his team.
On Monday the late-night TV host did his best to bring success to the North Siders. He opened his show by watching a Cubs walk-off win, after which the announcer says, “Will they be lucky enough to end their 100-year championship drought?” Colbert replies, “Yes they will,” and then brings out some good-luck props.
Colbert began by rubbing a horseshoe, then a rabbit’s foot, then a three-legged rabbit.
Then: three Cubs.
The Northwestern University alumnus brought in Cubs All-Stars Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Jake Arrieta, and gave them a rub-down in hopes it would launch them to an ever-elusive World Series.
The best part may be how the players remain stone-faced throughout the whole bit.
Let’s hope this works better than his monologue last fall, during which he said, “”The Cubs are gonna win the World Series. I guarantee it.” The Cubs went on to get swept by the New York Mets in the NLCS.
Rizzo, Bryant and Arrieta will join teammates Addison Russell, Ben Zobrist, Jon Lester and Dexter Fowler tonight as members of the National League All-Star team.
