CHICAGO -- A man has been charged in the murder of an Urban Prep student over the weekend.
17-year-old Christopher Fields was killed Saturday night.
His family says the Urban Prep student stayed out of trouble and tried to help others. In fact, he was helping his cousin when he was gunned down.
His father Rickey D. Fields says he did everything a man is supposed to do.
“I taught him manners. I taught him how to speak somebody,” he said.
He protected his son and taught him how to protect others.
Christopher was walking his female cousin home Saturday night when he was shot and killed outside the family house in the 5200 block of South Sangamon.
“He did everything that you always wanted your child to be,” Rickey said. “And that night his cousin was coming home, he did one more round to take care. He protected her. He protected her all her life.”
Fields had just left the house 10 minutes before the shooting. His brother called him to ask that he rush back because his son had been gunned down.
“When I got there, he was with the paramedics and they was working on him. And I begged them to let me see him and they said they could not. They had to keep working on him.”
Christopher attended Urban Prep and he boxed at Bridgeport Boxing Club. There he was known as Sandman.
Authorities have charged 26-year-old Deonte Davis with first degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. Police say before the shooting, he tried to rob a man at gunpoint.
Rickey was in court yesterday when Davis went before a judge. He is another Chicago father now experiencing the anguish of burying his son.
“We got a problem here,” Ricky said. “We’ve got a problem because the babies are being murdered. They’re being murdered and nobody seems to care. Nobody seems to sit down and worry about the gun use."
The family is planning a funeral for Saturday the 25th.
