ANTIOCH, Ill. -- Authorities describe it as a grisly scene as they try to figure out exactly how a 71-year-old woman died in her home, and whether her two dogs played a role in her death.

Officials say her 23-year-old grandson returned home from work to find her dead in a bedroom. A neighbor says moments later he came outside and was visibly upset.

The question for investigators are trying to solve: was she dead before the dogs attacked her? Or, did the dogs cause her death?

The dogs are identified as a Lab-Chow mix and a German Shepherd. The shepherd was found wandering the neighborhood.

The dogs remain in custody of animal control at the very least until the exact cause of death is determined.

An autopsy will be done today.
