CHICAGO -- Four people were killed, and at least 48 others have been wounded in shootings in this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

First Deputy Police Superintendent John Escalante says while the violence is concerning, many of the victims are known to police.

The department has a list of about 1,500 people who are likely to shoot someone, or be shot soon.

Most shootings this weekend happened on the West Side. The department responded yesterday by putting even more officers on patrol there.

“I think people have to realize it’s a big city but it’s a beautiful city and it really is a safe city,” Escalante said.

Last year, 12 people were killed and 44 people were wounded over the entire Memorial Day weekend.
