SAN FRANCISCO – Cubs fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Jason Heyward will be back sooner than many expected.
An MRI on Heyward’s abdomen revealed a contusion but no structural damage.
As a result, the Cubs gold glove outfielder will avoid a trip to the disabled list.
The team expects Heyward to only miss three to five days and didn’t rule out a possible return by the end of the road trip.
In the meantime, the Cubs have activated utility man Matt Szczur, who will be available for today’s game.
Right-handed relief pitcher Neil Ramirez has been designated for assignment to make room for Szczur.
