DES MOINES, Ia. — A teenage girl in Iowa has died after authorities say a brick column collapsed onto a hammock she was in.

The hammock was strung between a tree and a brick column with a light post in the family’s yard in Des Moines, Iowa.

The accident happened Saturday when Peri Sagun, 13, jumped into the hammock with her sister, causing the column to collapse. The bricks collapsed hitting the teen in the head.

She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Police say the brick column was decorative and likely not strong enough to hold the weight of both girls.

According to KCCI, Peri was an 8th grade honor student and scheduled to graduate next Wednesday.
