CHICAGO – The fifth spot in the White Sox pitching rotation is still up for grabs, but they’ll have some help filling the void in the meantime.

Scott Carroll is joining the bullpen.

The 31-year-old right-hander will take over for Erik Johnson on the big league roster.

Carroll has appeared in three games for the Class AAA Charlotte Knights, going 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA.

He made 18 relief appearances for the White Sox last season, compiling a 3.44 ERA to go along with a 1-1 record.

Veteran catcher Alex Avila will head down to Charlotte for a rehabilitation assignment as he continues to recover from a right hamstring injury.

Avila has been on the 15-day D.L since April 24th, when he first strained his hamstring.

He is hitting .214 with five walks on the year in his first season with the White Sox after signing as a free agent in December.
