EVANSTON – Evanston Police are asking for help from the public to find a man who tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his car.

It happened Saturday at about 1:40 p.m. as the girl walked in the 200 block of Main Street.

She told police a man in a white SUV pulled up to her and asked the girl about the location of a coffee shop in the area.

She said he also asked her to show him where the shop was located.

Police say the man then got out of the SUV, opened up the passenger door and asked the girl to get inside.

The girl refused to go inside the vehicle and stepped back.

She told police that the man got back into the SUV and was last seen eastbound on Main Street.

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man between 20 and 30 years old with a goatee.

His car was a newer white sports utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet Traverse.

He told the girl his name was  “Jose”.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact Evanston police at 847-866-5000.
