CHICAGO — Former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords visited Chicago yesterday to lend her support to gun-control efforts.

Giffords was severely injured by a gunman during a political appearance in Tucson in 2011.

She appeared on the Near North Side to support a bill in Springfield that would impose more controls on licensed gun dealers.

The bill in question would require background checks for people who work for gun dealers.

They would be trained on how to conduct a background check on a gun buyer, and on how to recognize a “straw” purchaser — someone who buys a gun on behalf of someone else who can’t legally own one.
