PLAINFIELD, Ill. -- The life of one family was altered dramatically in seconds when a little girl and her mother's boyfriend crashed on an ATV in Plainfield. The boyfriend survived. The little girl did not.

Just before seven o'clock last night on Ridge Road, 9-year-old Alexis Richardson was riding with a 53-year-old man between 135th Street and Plainfield Road on an asphalt path intended only for walkers and cyclists. The man drove the vehicle onto the grass, into a culvert and lost control.

Plainfield police were called, and officers performed CPR on Richardson, who lived in the 13000 block of Conifer and was a student at Grand Park Elementary. The girl was airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, where she died. The man was transported to Rush Copley.

The off-road vehicle was not licensed to be where it was. Police say that Richardson's mother -- too distraught to speak of the tragedy -- recently moved to Plainfield from Joliet.

Police are warning ATV owners to be extraordinarily careful, so something like this doesn't happen again.

When the investigation concludes, police will deliver their findings to the office of the State's Attorney to determine if charges will be filed.
