Cook County officials are pushing for animal abuse  registry.

It would prohibit convicted animal abusers from buying or adopting animals for 15 years or more after their conviction.

The ordinance would also require pet shops, shelters and rescues to check the registry before selling or adopting out animals.

Failure to register would result in a 2-thousand dollar fine.
