CREST HILL, Ill. -- Crest Hill police and fire investigators are looking into the cause of a deadly fire that killed a 1-year-old boy and left his mother critically injured. While police don't suspect foul play, they say they believe it was a terrible tragedy.
The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday in a second-floor unit of a three-story, 36-unit building in the Woodland Apartment Complex in Crest Hill. Residents say they heard alarms going off and smelled smoke, then ran out of the building.
First responders say they tried desperately to revive the child who later died after being rushed to the hospital.
Residents say their thoughts and prayers are with the woman and her son. Several dozen people were displaced as a result of the fire. The investigation into what started the fire is ongoing.
