The Illinois tollway and state police are planning added safety measures on the Jane Addams tollway in the coming weeks after two fatal crashes in the construction zone in less than a month.

Today’s fatal crash happened in the I-90 construction zone during National Work Zone Awareness Week.

A van heading westbound on the Jane Addams Tollway collided with a tow truck past Roselle Rd.  The driver the van, a 79-year-old from Elgin was killed and the tow truck driver injured.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation..  It is the second fatal crash in the tollway’s construction zone in less than a month.

On March 25th, one person was killed and six others injured in a limousine crash near Elgin.   Just last week, two of those injured in the crash filed a lawsuit against the limousine company.  Recently, two construction companies were added as defendants to that lawsuit citing a dangerous and confusing construction zone.

The tollway says it plans to add new speed radar signs on I-90 and more message boards to communicate delays and lane pattern changes with drivers.

State police will also keep a visible presence in the construction zone.

At a press conference in Chicago earlier this week, state police said they did not find the I-90 construction zone unsafe and said drivers should be more responsible.

The tollway says it’s committed to ensuring that I-90 remains safe for drivers during construction and that there’s no higher priority than keeping their customers safe. They plan to continue to monitor conditions along I-90 and make addition adjustments as needed to ensure safety on the road.
