CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois coach Lovie Smith says sophomore receiver Mike Dudek will miss a second consecutive season after again tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee

Smith said Friday that Dudek will have surgery next week.

Dudek tore the ACL on Saturday in a non-contract drill. It was his second practice after returning from the same injury suffered last April.

Smith called the news tough for Dudek because he had worked hard to return to the field.

As a freshman in 2014 Dudek was a freshman All American and Illinois’ top receiver. He had 76 catches for 1,038 yards. He also tied College Football Hall of Famer David Williams for the Illinois freshman record with six touchdown catches.
