CHICAGO -- A woman whose image has gone viral because of her provocative gesture is speaking out.

The picture taken by a Chicago Tribune photographer is all over social media.

Michael Joseph Garza, who is seen on the left of the photo, says there is no denying it. He says the picture is exactly what it looks like, a woman giving a Nazi salute. It was taken outside the UIC Pavilion last night in the tense moments between protesters and supporters after Donald Trump's rally was canceled.

But the woman in the picture, Birgitt Peterson, who was born in Germany and is a U.S. citizen says she is not a Nazi or racist. She says she was engaging in conversation with a group of people who were comparing Trump to Hitler, and she was trying to educate them about why she believes it's wrong to compare anyone to Hitler.
