CHICAGO — Several students at a South Side elementary school were taken to hospitals after pepper spray was released in their classroom.

Police say a small canister of Mace discharged around 8:45 a.m. Thursday in a fourth grade classroom at the University of Chicago’s Donoghue campus on East 37th Street.

About 30 children were in the room at the time. None of them appeared to have any serious injuries.

They were checked for irritation of the skin and eyes.

Sixteen of the students were taken to hospitals in good condition.

Police haven’t said who brought the pepper spray to class or how it was released.
