BROOKLYN, NY -- A New York police officer was saved by his bulletproof vest over the weekend, just like his father was 27 years ago.

Officer Andrew Yurkiw was shot in the chest during a call on Saturday.

His father is retired from the NYPD bomb squad.

In 1989 Paul Yurkiw was shot three times and survived thanks to his bulletproof vest.

He says Andrew has a bruise the size of a grapefruit on his chest but is recovering at home.

Andrew's partner was shot in the hip and also is expected to make a full recovery.
