ESSEX, Ill. – An 85-year-old man is dead after falling through an icy lake in the south suburban village of Essex.

Lloyd Meredith, 85, worked at Shannon Shores, an RV/mobile home park and went to fix a plumbing problem on Tuesday night.

When he and another worker had finished the job, they parted ways. Meredith rode his ATV to his home a short distance away.

On Wednesday morning, he didn’t show up to work so a well-being check was conducted on his home.

They found him missing, along with his ATV.

Kankakee County Sheriff’s officers initiated a search, and just before 3 p.m., officers spotted ATV tracks through the snow leading to a break in the ice.

Divers were then called in to search the icy waters. They found Meredith's submerged ATV, then the victim at about 4:20 p.m.

The man had reportedly lived on Shannon Lake for 40 years and knew the area well.

Investigators believe he may have slowed down on a patch of thin ice as he couldn’t see in the darkness – causing enough pressure for him to fall in.

They also say they were surprised that he fell through the ice in that particular location.
