BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Three quick-thinking high schoolers saved a busload of students when their driver lost control due to a medical emergency.
When the substitute driver missed the exit to the school and began swerving on New Jersey Route 22, student Kayla Wright asked him what was wrong.
The driver didn’t respond, but made grunting noises and grabbed his chest.
That’s when Gavin Costello and Angelo Mel-tos sprang into action. As the bus slowed for a red light, Costello jammed the gear shift into park. Mel-tos opened the door and told the other 25 students to get out of the bus.
The driver was taken to a hospital in fair condition. The nature of his illness has not been disclosed.
