PEARLAND, Texas —  A father in suburban Houston is free on bail, charged with trying to sell his adopted son.

The asking price for 16-year-old Alan Hoyt: $1,000 and a pickup truck.

Surveillance cameras were recording and an undercover police officer was in the room when Ronald Hoyt agreed to the deal last week, prosecutors say, in exchange for his parental rights.

He was arrested three days later when he returned for payment.

The relationship between father and son had soured before Alan met Michael Gonzales last year.  Gonzales took the teen in and went to court asking to become his guardian.

But the elder Hoyt reportedly wanted something in return.

He is charged with sale or purchase of a child, a 3rd degree felony.
